Two-Phase Treatment

What Is Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment?

Two-phase treatment combines tooth alignment with guidance of facial and jaw development. The goal is to create a healthy, functional, and great-looking result that stays stable throughout your child’s life. By addressing jaw structure early, we set the stage for a smoother and often shorter second phase of treatment later on.

What If We Wait?

Putting off treatment can make things more complex down the road. Some issues are much easier to correct during childhood, when the jaw is still growing and can be guided. Waiting until all the adult teeth are in sometimes means more invasive treatment or results that don’t hold as well long-term.

Phase One: Building the Right Foundation

The goal of Phase One is to help the jaw develop in a way that will accommodate all the permanent teeth and improve how the upper and lower jaws fit together. We often see early signs of jaw problems while children are still growing, and acting during this window can prevent more significant issues later. Phase One typically happens between ages six and ten and may involve appliances like palatal expanders or partial braces. Treatment usually lasts about nine to eighteen months.

The Resting Period

After Phase One, we monitor your child as their remaining permanent teeth come in. This is a natural pause, not a gap in care. We keep an eye on things and time Phase Two to begin when it will be most effective.

Phase Two: Completing the Smile

Phase Two focuses on moving all the permanent teeth into their final positions so they work together beautifully. Full braces or aligners are typically used at this stage. Because Phase One created a solid foundation, Phase Two often goes more smoothly and quickly than it would have without it. The result is a smile that functions well and looks great for the long haul.
